It is remarkable that some of the most renowned design classics from the
Netherlands include several created by a French designer. Artifort’s numbers 437,
577 and 582 -- better known as “Orange Slice chair”, “Tongue” and “Ribbon chair”–-
are included in the collections of many museums. The French designer in question
is Pierre Paulin, born in Paris in 1927. In the sixties and seventies he determined the
image of Artifort, together with designers Geoffrey Harcourt and Kho Liang Ie. Even
today, his furniture is considered contemporary in appearance and acts as asource of
inspiration for other designers.
Now, for the first time, designs created by Paulin for Artifort have been compiled in
a catalogue. Some of these models have been part of the collection for more than
forty years, but others have been reintroduced more recently or will be brought into
production soon. Paulin was always keen to get the most out of his designs where
production methods and materials were concerned. In this book, it is all too clear
that his way of thinking has left us something quite valuable.
