Meet Albert and Ellen

In the Artifort collection, anyone who values form and function will find a design that captures their heart. Forever. Artifort spoke to Artifans Albert and Ellen about their love for Artifort. Their latest Artifort furniture is the iconic armchair Orange Slice by designer Pierre Paulin.

Albert and Ellen have lived in a detached semi-bungalow in Flevoland province since 2017. Characteristic of their interior design style is the combination of modern that is interspersed with antiques and art. High-quality is reflected in all facets of the interior. Artifort engaged in conversation about their love for design, their new Orange Slice armchair and what home means to them.

How would you describe your interior design style?
Albert: "Our taste is a balanced mix between modern and antique. When furnishing our house, we paid a lot of attention to form and colour, but certainly also to materials. Wool, leather, steel, marble and wood. These varied material choices contribute to the dynamic character of our furnishings. The contrasts make it vibrant. A great example of this is our workplace at home. In front of our antique English mahogany desk from around 1850 is a modernist designer chair with a wire-steel frame."

Where do you know the brand Artifort from?
"We have known Artifort for many years. The first encounter was in 1982. I was walking past a furniture shop in The Hague at the time when I saw model F589 by Pierre Paulin, better known as Groovy, in the window. 'I want that one!', I thought. The unique designer furniture has stood in our home for many years. Years later, I discovered that my childhood home also had an Artifort design: the Pinguïn. A 1953 classic designed by Theo Ruth."

In spring 2023, Artifort's partner MisterDesign curated the exhibition 'The Art of Comfort' in collaboration with Artifort. For visitors to the shop, more than 20 unique designs from 1954 to the present were exhibited, telling the story of Artifort's designs and designers. During the exhibition, visitors could enter a prize draw where an exclusive version of the Orange Slice was raffled off. You visited the expo and a few weeks later you got a call with great news.
"I remember the phone ringing on a Friday afternoon. MisterDesign called with the wonderful news that we were the winners. We did not expect it, but certainly hoped for it as a big fan of Pierre Paulin's designs. Our Orange Slice has now been given a beautiful spot in our living room. We enjoy the armchair daily. "

What appeals most to you about the design language of the Orange Slice?
"The perfect organic design, and with it very good seating comfort. This is true of all Pierre Paulin's designs, by the way. What is also inventive and very good with the Slice: the simplicity of the design. Two identical parts on four legs. How simple it can be."

Besides the Orange Slice, which Artifort designs enrich your interior?
"The biggest eye-catcher in our interior is the Ribbon armchair. Again from designer Pierre Paulin. Besides the beautiful design, the colour also stands out: cerise red. We saved for this design for a long time, but are still so happy with it every day. It is a true art object. Besides the Ribbon armchair, we also have a Nina chair. This one stands by Ellen's dressing table, so it is lovingly used every day."

What are you most proud of in your home?
"We are most proud of the successful mix of objects, materials and colours. This includes our (modest) collection of artwork."

What means ‘home’ to you?
"For us, home means that you like being at home because you enjoy an interior that inspires and satisfies you. Day after day, it never gets boring."
