As Art Director of Artifort in the 1960s to mid 1970s, Kho Liang Ie played a defining role in shaping the DNA of Artifort. His vision of timeless, human-centred design, combining clarity, warmth and functionality, still resonates strongly within contemporary design today. In May 2026, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will open the first major museum retrospective of Kho Liang Ie in more than fifty years.

The exhibition "Kho Liang Ie: Mid-Century Modernist" brings together more than 200 objects alongside extensive archival material, offering a rich and layered insight into his multidisciplinary practice. From furniture and interiors to exhibition design and graphic work, it reveals the coherence of his thinking across scales and contexts. With Kho Liang Ie's poetic sensibility and distinctive material choices, he introduced a subtle playfulness to the clarity of modernism.

The exhibition is on view at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam until 18 October 2026.

Artifort and the Artifort Archive have been privileged to contribute significantly to the presentation. Alongside numerous heritage pieces, the exhibition is furnished with contemporary Kho models, allowing visitors to experience them first-hand. After the exhibition, these Artifort pre-used models will be made available for project interiors and domestic settings.

The exhibition "Kho Liang Ie: Mid-Century Modernist" is curated by Eng Bo Kho, son of Kho Liang Ie, and Ingeborg De Roode.
