Meet
Artifan Judith

In the series Meet the Artifans, Artifort visits design lovers who share a special connection with their Artifort furniture. The series highlights how these designs are not only functional but also carry stories, evoke memories, and connect generations. This time, Artifort visited Judith – for whom her Artifort armchair has been a familiar part of life since childhood. What began as a piece of furniture in her parents' home, has grown into a cherished design that now enriches her own interior.

In the spring of 2025, Judith and her partner Bart moved into a charming split-level in Oud-Beijerland. While her previous interior reflected a sleek Japandi style, her new home embraces a playful mix of Bauhaus, bold colours, unexpected shapes, and personal character. “We deliberately choose elements that surprise and inspire,” Judith explains. One constant remained: the F510 armchair by Artifort, which was recently given a fresh new look through reupholstery at Artifort Shop. Artifort spoke with Judith about her love for design, the special story behind her F510 armchair, and why she chose to have it professionally reupholstered by Artifort Shop.

Can you remember your first experience with Artifort?

Judith: "As a baby! Haha. I’ve never known any different – at home, our swivel chair was always just called ‘the Artifort chair’. It was only much later that I realised this was the brand name, and I started reading more about it. Now I’ve become one of those people who walks into someone else’s home and says, ‘Hey! An Artifort chair!"

You have the iconic F510 armchair – what’s the story behind this design?

"The armchair was purchased by my father around 1982 and was always in my parents’ home. In 1998, it was reupholstered and changed from grey to royal blue. When my parents redecorated, there was some discussion about parting with the armchair. I made sure that didn’t happen, as I felt it was a timeless piece and it would have been a shame to part with something so full of memories. And so, it came to live with me - I believe that was around 2014."

Did the armchair hold a special spot in your parents’ home?
"In our family home, it was always in the living room, though it sometimes moved around within the seating area. Sometimes on the left, sometimes on the right. Because the armchair swivels, it was a design that could be placed anywhere - you could watch the TV, but also easily turn it around to have some privacy for reading a book. "

Do you remember who was the main user of the armchair back then — and who uses it these days?
"My mother absolutely loved sitting in it! She still does, actually - whenever she visits, she always settles straight into the armchair. At the moment, I’m usually the one sitting in it, but that changes now and then. It just depends on what feels right."

What makes this design so special to you?
"It’s a beautifully sleek design, and thanks to the curve, it’s incredibly comfortable. I like that it swivels, so you can settle into the armchair from any side. It’s also nice that it’s quite wide - you can sit with your legs tucked up or cross-legged. My parents used to sit in it together often; my father sometimes calls it the ‘love seat’. It’s big enough to sit side by side, and children love to curl up in it two or three at a time. It’s always very popular at birthday parties!"

You recently had the armchair reupholstered at the Artifort Shop – what made you decide to do this?
"It had been planned for a long time, but because of the cost of reupholstering and the overwhelming range of fabrics available, I hadn’t got around to it. The main reason, though, was that my cats had completely ruined the fabric. It was a corduroy material—ideal for scratching, unfortunately. The colour wasn’t quite to my taste either. In the end, I deliberately chose to have it reupholstered by Artifort themselves, as this ensures the armchair’s value is preserved, partly thanks to the Certificate of Authenticity you receive afterwards. They know the design down to the smallest detail and understand exactly how the original lines and curves should flow. I also kept the original disc base, which was important to me. "

What was your experience like during the reupholstery process?
"The most exciting part was definitely choosing the colour and fabric! It’s quite difficult to decide what will look good and how it will turn out in the end. Still, I knew fairly quickly that I wanted something bold — that suits the armchair well. It was really helpful to see the large fabric samples in the Artifort showroom when making the decision. That really helped us choose. In the end, the reupholstering went very smoothly, and I got the armchair back looking even better than before! "

Where is the armchair placed in your home now, and how does it fit with the interior?
"Of course, it’s back in the living room, and it’s the first thing you see when you walk in. It has a lovely spot near the entrance, so when you’re sitting in it, you can take in the whole room. It fits perfectly with the interior, although I must admit I chose everything with the armchair’s new colour in mind. The other colours in the living room really complement the armchair’s shade! "
